In SharePoint Server 2010, Search can utilize the default connectors, which were called “protocol handlers” in previous versions, to connect to different content repositories. The purpose of these connectors is to allow you to crawl content in external repositories. You can install additional connectors from other third-party vendors or create your own using SharePoint Designer 2010 and Visual Studio 2010. Please note that SharePoint includes connectors for Lotus Notes and Microsoft Exchange.

Here is the list of the default connectors.
