Wireless Networks Not Available After Upgrading to Windows 10

A couple of days ago I posted an article What to Do When Windows 10 Fails to See Network Adapter After the Upgrade in which I reported that after upgrading my Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, my network adapters (wired and wireless) were working fine but Windows 10 couldn’t quite see them so both wired and wireless networks were not accessible. I wasn’t the only one reporting this issue. There were a lot of people around the world running into the same issue and the culprit turned out to be Cisco VPN client.

Today I saw a Knowledge Base (KB) article from Microsoft confirming that it is a known problem in Windows 10. The article is called No wireless networks are available after you upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. According to Microsoft, the connections are affected through both the built-in Ethernet network adapter and the USB Ethernet adapter. The KB article states that it is listing the known issues (plural) and the appropriate resolutions (plural) but then goes on to list only ISSUE #1 with only one resolution. By the way, the issue seems to be related to  older versions of the Cisco VPN client and SonicWall Global VPN client. Here’s the solution from Microsoft.

Symptoms

Unsupported VPN software is present during the upgrade to Windows 10.

Cause

This issue may occur if older VPN software is installed on Windows 8.1 and is present during the upgrade to Windows 10. Older software versions contain a filter driver (the Deterministic Network Enhancer) that is not upgraded correctly.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Open an administrative Command Prompt window.
  2. Run the following commands:
    reg delete HKCR\CLSID\{988248f3-a1ad-49bf-9170-676cbbc36ba3} /f

    netcfg -v -u dni_dne

This problem affects the following:

  • Windows 10 Enterprise
  • Windows 10 Pro
  • Surface Pro 3
  • Surface Pro 2
  • Surface Pro
  • Surface 3
